The New Orleans Psychoanalytic Foundation

The New Orleans-Birmingham Psychoanalytic Foundation provides support for the activities of the New Orleans-Birmingham Psychoanalytic Center. The Foundation, directed by a community-based Board, is a non-profit corporation dedicated to the advancement of psychoanalytic understanding of human life and behavior through community outreach, education, research and clinical programs.

Due largely to the successful initiative of Dr. Remi Gonzalez, The New Orleans-Birmingham Psychoanalytic Foundation was formed in 1998 to establish itself as a significant contributor to the community in the area of psychoanalysis. It is a non-profit organization duly incorporated and registered with the Secretary of State in Louisiana and recognized as a 501(C)(3) tax-free organization by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service.

Leadership

As Treasurer of the New Orleans–Birmingham Psychoanalytic Center, Joe Drolla the position of President of the Foundation following the dedicated leadership of Ted Reveley M.D. Dr. Reveley continues to serve on the Board and Elsa Pool Ph.D., continues her energetic service as Board Secretary. Recent additions as members of the Board are: Margaret Calahan BCSW, Stephen Kowalski M.D. of Birmingham, Robin Benton-Crutcher BCSW,  and Ms. Judy Rush Eckhardt of New Orleans.

Funding

The financial sources of the Foundation initially came from members, candidates and faculty of the New Orleans-Birmingham Psychoanalytic Center. More recently, support is being received from the community-at-large.

Among other Fundraising activities, the Foundation has sponsored popular fund raisers such as jazz concerts during APsaA’s Spring Meeting in 2001 and the International Psychoanalytic Association meeting in 2003, both held in New Orleans.

History

The idea of establishing a Foundation to support educational programs as well as providing a variety of services to the community, educational opportunities for those interested in pursuing psychoanalytic knowledge and assisting in research in the area of psychoanalysis had been discussed for a number of years, but did not become a reality until March 1998.

Harvey Rich, M.D., Past President of the American Psychoanalytic Foundation, agreed to come to New Orleans to address the faculty and candidates during our annual faculty retreat. At a spring retreat in 1997, Dr. Harvey Rich, Chairman of the Committee on Foundations of the American Psychoanalytic Association, met with the Institute faculty and candidates at Lakewood Country Club. After a fruitful discussion of the issues, a decision to embark in the establishment of a Foundation was reached. Dr. Rich spoke in his inimitable way about the role of psychoanalytic foundations, and permitted no one to leave the room until he or she had made a significant five-year pledge to the Foundation.
Once the Foundation was formed by action of the Board of the Institute, the original Foundation Board consisted entirely of psychoanalysts: Drs. Remigio Gonzalez, James Macgregor, Gunther Perdigao, Ted Reveley, and Samuel Rubin.

By 1999, non-analyst members of the Board were Attorney Henry B. Alsobrook, Jr.; Sister Anthony Barezykowski, Chief Executive Officer of New Orleans Associated Catholic Charities; Ms. Donna Newton, Director of the Parenting Center at Children’s Hospital of New Orleans; Ms. Eddy Rosen; The Reverend Prim B. Smith, Jr., Episcopal Chaplain to Tulane University; and Stephen Sontheimer.

In 2005, in conjunction with the reorganization of the Institute and the Society into the Center, the Foundation was established as a subsidiary organization of the Center. Board Secretary-Treasurer, Elsa Pool, then re-wrote the new By-Laws.

Past and Current Programs and Projects

Of special importance has been the support Foundation has offered by underwriting the significant additional expenses incurred by the Center following the disruption of Hurricane Katrina and the failure of the levees in New Orleans. The Foundation has organized and financed various activities through the years, including:

  • The Joyce McDougal lecture entitled: "The Many Faces of Eros: A Case of Voyeurism,” co-sponsored by the New Orleans Psychoanalytic Society and the Foundation.
  • Co-sponsored, in January, 2000, with the Parenting Center, a presentation by Drs. Kerry and Kelly Novick regarding their therapeutic nursery school in Michigan.
  • The second Irwin M. Marcus, M.D. Lectureship featuring Kerry and Jack Novick, both child, adolescent and adult analysts and founders and directors of the Allen Creed Preschool. This program was co-sponsored by the Jewish Community Center.
  • Consultation program with nursery school directors. For several years the Foundation supported organized by the Institute in 1990 a program to provide onsite direct observation and discussion of situations arising during the course of everyday school events and enable interventions that helpful to children and may be useful to parents and teachers. The consultants were members of the Institute's faculty.
  • Provides financial support of the Studies in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, a psychotherapy training program which admitted its first class in Fall of 2000, with new classes beginning at two year intervals.
